1. Come<\/h3>\n

Making sure your dog will come when called is essential if you\u2019re letting your dog go off-leash in public or if he or she escapes your grasp. This command will help you control the situation so you\u2019re not chasing your dog.<\/p>\n

2. Sit<\/h3>\n

This is a great command when your dog is overly excited or could be in the way. Tell your dog to sit when they are barking at the doorbell, hyped up to go on a walk, or underfoot when you\u2019re bringing in groceries.<\/p>\n

3. Stay<\/h3>\n

Telling your dog to \u201cstay\u201d means \u201cstay here until I tell you to move.\u201d A well-trained dog won\u2019t budge an inch, even if you\u2019re not in sight and they see a squirrel.<\/p>\n

Instead of wrestling with your dog to get something out of his or her mouth (errant chicken bone perhaps?), teach\u00a0them to drop into your hand instead. This also helps when you play fetch and he or she is a little reluctant to give up the ball.<\/p>\n

Useful both for getting off furniture and not leaping on people, the \u201coff\u201d command can be necessary when your dog gets over excited.<\/p>\n

7. Release<\/h3>\n

Train your dog to keep obeying a command until you tell\u00a0them to stop. If you don\u2019t train your dog that you will release him or her from a \u201cstay\u201d command, they won\u2019t know how long to obey before he or she can go. Some people use the command \u201cokay\u201d or \u201ctake a break\u201d for this.<\/p>\n
