Or why some puppies look nothing like their parents? Well, it\u2019s in their DNA! Different genes and genetic combinations control the color of your dog\u2019s hair and their coat pattern.<\/p>\n<p>The vast number of colors and patterns of dogs\u2019 coats have made it hard for scientists to discover which genes are behind them, but a recent study has shed some light on the mysteries behind dog coat patterns.<\/p>\n<h2>All Coat Colors Come From Two Pigments<\/h2>\n<p>If you go to a dog park, there will likely be a rainbow of colors running around. With the variety of colors that dogs\u2019 coats come in, you might think there are multiple pigments that cause these hair colors. But the colors are formed from just two pigments \u2014 eumelanin (black or brown) and phaeomelanin (red, yellow or tan).<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Krista Williams and Dr. Lynn Buzhardt explain in an article from <a title=\"Genetics Basics: Coat Color Genetics in Dogs\" href=\"https:\/\/vcahospitals.com\/know-your-pet\/genetics-basics-coat-color-genetics-in-dogs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">VCA Animal Hospitals<\/a> that both of these pigments are forms of melanin, which is produced in the hair as it grows, with darker colors having more melanin. Sometimes the melanin is produced at different rates, which is why a single hair can look lighter or darker at different places along the shaft.<\/p>\n<p>Phaeomelanin is only produced in hair, but eumelanin can influence hair, eye and nose color (e.g., a pink nose vs. a black nose). If your dog has white hair, it\u2019s because neither of the pigments was produced in their hair. An albino dog is rare and occurs when eumelanin isn\u2019t produced anywhere.<\/p>\n<h2>Genes Control Coat Color and Patterns<\/h2>\n<p>The amount of eumelanin or phaeomelanin produced in a dog\u2019s hair \u2014 and where those colors are produced (the coat pattern) \u2014 is controlled by a variety of genes. Below is a summary of the loci (location of genes) that control coat color and patterns in dogs as described in the <a title=\"Genetics Basics: Coat Color Genetics in Dogs\" href=\"https:\/\/vcahospitals.com\/know-your-pet\/genetics-basics-coat-color-genetics-in-dogs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">VCA Animal Hospitals<\/a> article.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A (agouti) locus \u2014 controls different coat patterns<\/li>\n<li>E (extension) locus \u2014 creates a black facial mask and yellow or red coats<\/li>\n<li>K (dominant black) locus \u2014 controls dominant black, brindle and fawn colors<\/li>\n<li>B (brown) locus \u2014 linked to brown, chocolate and liver colors<\/li>\n<li>D (dilute) locus \u2014 lightens coats from black or brown to gray or blue or very pale brown<\/li>\n<li>M (merle) locus \u2014 this is a mutation that causes merle coats, which are irregularly shaped patches of diluted eumelanin pigment and solid color<\/li>\n<li>H (harlequin) locus \u2014 associated with white dogs that have black patches and often interacts with the merle locus<\/li>\n<li>S (spotting) locus \u2014 associated with patterns like piebald, particolored and extreme white<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Research Describes Dog Coat Patterns<\/h2>\n<p>The agouti locus controls the different patterns seen in dogs\u2019 coats and was the focus of a recent study conducted to better understand the genetics behind dog coat patterns. The research, published in <a title=\"Dog colour patterns explained by modular promoters of ancient canid origin\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41559-021-01524-x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nature Evolution and Ecology<\/a> and summarized in a <a title=\"Dog Coat Patterns Have Ancient Origin\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ucdavis.edu\/curiosity\/news\/dog-coat-patterns-have-ancient-origin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UC Davis news article<\/a>, reported that five dog coat color patterns are controlled by the agouti signaling protein (<em>ASIP<\/em>) gene at two locations \u2014 dominant yellow, shaded yellow, agouti, black saddle and black back.<\/p>\n<p>The <a title=\"Agouti (A Locus)\" href=\"https:\/\/vgl.ucdavis.edu\/test\/agouti-dog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory<\/a> explains that there is also a recessive black phenotype controlled in a different region of the <em>ASIP<\/em> gene. <a title=\"Agouti (A Locus)\" href=\"https:\/\/vgl.ucdavis.edu\/test\/agouti-dog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Genetic tests for <em>ASIP<\/em> are available<\/a> so breeders can determine the gene combinations present in the sire and dam and help predict the coat colors and patterns of their puppies.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14647\" src=\"https:\/\/www.diamondpet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/dog-phenotype-common-names-032823.jpg\" alt=\"Dog phenotype names &amp; common names. | Diamond Pet Foods\" width=\"2083\" height=\"3309\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.diamondpet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/dog-phenotype-common-names-032823.jpg 2083w, https:\/\/www.diamondpet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/dog-phenotype-common-names-032823-768x1220.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.diamondpet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/dog-phenotype-common-names-032823-967x1536.jpg 967w, https:\/\/www.diamondpet.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/dog-phenotype-common-names-032823-1289x2048.jpg 1289w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2083px) 100vw, 2083px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>The Evolution of Coat Color Patterns<\/h2>\n<p>The coat color pattern research also found that a particular gene combination for one of the coat color patterns, dominant yellow, is almost identical in yellow dogs and Arctic white wolves. They suggested that this DNA configuration originated more than 2 million years ago from an extinct relative of dogs and modern-day wolves that diverged from gray wolves. They also found the black back pattern in a 9,500-year-old dog DNA sample.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers hypothesized that the large varieties of coat color seen today in dogs and wolves is probably due to natural selection for a lighter coat during the Pleistocene Age, aka the Ice Age, which would have been helpful in an Arctic environment.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Genetics plays a large part in what a dog looks like, and that includes their coat color and pattern.
